"In the representation of any utterance, feature values are linked to each other by relations such as precedence and constituency, and form phonemes, or combinations of substantially overlapping features... Phonemes contrast with each other: a difference between a phoneme pair, embedded in otherwise identical contexts, normally has the potential to convey a meaning difference..."
